ARTIST STATEMENT
Elmira Mazan is an emerging artist painting figures and portraits. She works in oil paint on paper, emphasizing light, shadow, and color in a loose, textural style that highlights her tools and materials. Her work creates impressions of emotion and character while letting the subject’s identity fade away.
Elmira works from life, as well as from historical and contemporary photography. Her paintings distill the common human elements from a diverse set of subjects, and invite you to relate to them across boundaries of time and space. Each painting strives to tell two stories – the story of a person at a moment in time, and the story of how oil, pigment, and paper were crafted into the painting before you. She aims to create artwork that people can connect to both as an image of humanity, and as a physical artifact.
BIOGRAPHY
Elmira lives in Saratoga County, New York with her partner and two very cute cats. After a 17 year career in engineering, she has dedicated herself to the craft of painting and has never been happier.
